About Attorney Timothy L. Murphy

Landlord-Tenant Lawyer in Portland, Oregon

I have been practicing law for sixteen years. For the past two decades, my law practice has been almost exclusively landlord / tenant law. Over this period, I have represented hundreds of commercial and residential owners and managers. I have resolved every manner of commercial and residential dispute, including claims of breach of lease, habitability problems, code violations, illegals entries, discrimination, retaliation and security deposit disputes. I have also represented many clients in commercial and residential evictions and other property seizures.

I was "of counsel" for Hummel & Barnhouse, P.C. from 2008 until 2012. Having represented thousands of clients, it was one of Oregon's preeminent law firms that handled exclusively landlord / tenant law. That firm closed in early 2012 when the last active partner retired. It was a great pleasure to work with Amy Barnhouse for those years. We both believed in delivering clear and cost-conscious advice to our clients. This is particularly important in evictions (FEDs) because the timelines are much shorter than ordinary litigation. Decisions must be made quickly or you'll end up paying unnecessary costs.

Prior to working with Hummel & Barnhouse, I maintained a solo law practice for four years that consisted primarily of landlord / tenant law. I also represented individuals and small businesses in consumer disputes, construction disputes, breaches of contract, breaches of commercial and residential leases, and real estate transactions and disputes. I was also an associate of Reeves Kahn & Hennessy and worked within the Office of Legislative Counsel in Salem, OR.

I graduated from Lewis & Clark Law School in 2000. I received the Cornelius Honor Society Award and was very involved with the Public Interest Law Project (PILP). In 2012, I received the Larry K. Amburgey Commitment to Public Interest Law Award in recognition of my ongoing support to PILP. I am also a graduate of Lehigh University in Bethlehem, PA, where I obtained a degree in civil engineering.
