About Attorney Timothy L. Murphy
Landlord-Tenant Lawyer in Portland, Oregon
I have been practicing law for sixteen years. For the past decade, my law practice has been almost exclusively landlord / tenant law. Over this period, I have represented hundreds of commercial and residential owners and managers. I have resolved every manner of commercial and residential dispute, including claims of breach of lease, habitability problems, code violations, illegals entries, discrimination, retaliation and security deposit disputes. I have also represented many clients in commercial and residential evictions and other property seizures.
I was "of counsel" for Hummel & Barnhouse, P.C. from 2008 until 2012. Having represented thousands of clients, it was one of Oregon's preeminent law firms that handled exclusively landlord / tenant law. That firm closed in early 2012 when the last active partner retired. It was a great pleasure to work with Amy Barnhouse for those years. We both believed in delivering clear and cost-conscious advice to our clients. This is particularly important in evictions (FEDs) because the timelines are much shorter than ordinary litigation. Decisions must be made quickly or you'll end up paying unnecessary costs.
Prior to working with Hummel & Barnhouse, I maintained a solo law practice for four years that consisted primarily of landlord / tenant law. I also represented individuals and small businesses in consumer disputes, construction disputes, breaches of contract, breaches of commercial and residential leases, and real estate transactions and disputes. I was also an associate of Reeves Kahn & Hennessy and worked within the Office of Legislative Counsel in Salem, OR.
I graduated from Lewis & Clark Law School in 2000. I received the Cornelius Honor Society Award and was very involved with the Public Interest Law Project (PILP). In 2012, I received the Larry K. Amburgey Commitment to Public Interest Law Award in recognition of my ongoing support to PILP. I am also a graduate of Lehigh University in Bethlehem, PA, where I obtained a degree in civil engineering.
About Attorney Michael Hallas
I am a long-time resident of the Portland and a 2001 graduate of Lewis and Clark Law School. In the past I have been licensed in California (not currently active) and I am currently licensed to practice before the Courts of the State of Oregon and the State of Washington. Throughout my practice have successfully represented clients in a variety of substantive legal areas including insurance defense, insurance subrogation, contractual disputes involving real estate transactions, adversarial bankruptcy proceedings, construction liens, and employment matters. For the past eight years my practice has largely focused on family law and helping clients successfully litigate or negotiate resolution of those disputes in an efficient and no-nonsense manner.
In all legal matters my goal is to help clients achieve a successful resolution of their dispute and move forward successfully afterwards. I enjoy connecting personally with my clients, understanding their goals and fighting to get the best possible result. I strive to provide pragmatic advice and focus on what is important to my clients as I work hard to protect their rights and interests. My broad substantive legal experience has given me the opportunity to represent clients on both sides of disputes, and, as a result, I find that I see legal disputes more objectively than practitioners who consistently represent one side over another. My ability to identify an opposing party's situation and likely objectives, treat that opposing party with respect and find where my client's objectives might intersect with the opposing party often gives me an edge in negotiating effective and efficient resolution. As I join the Murphy Law Group, I look forward to putting these skills to use for clients in all matters.
In addition to working with Tim to continue to achieve successful results for the firm's landlord clients, I will continue representing clients in domestic relations matters. I will continue to actively represent clients in contested and uncontested dissolution of marriage and registered domestic partnership actions, legal separations, the division of assets and liabilities in unmarried relationships, custody disputes, parenting time establishment and enforcement, establishing child support, and post-judgment modification of domestic relations judgments. I am also happy to help clients do pre-divorce planning, prepare for unrepresented direct negotiations or mediation, review settlement agreements and prepare related documents.
For fun I enjoy putting myself in the all the beauty the Pacific Northwest has to offer, but as a surfer I admit I tend to prefer the beach, even when it's cold. Though I am originally from a great city in western Pennsylvania and spent my 20's in the beach paradise that is Santa Cruz, California, I recognize I am lucky to northwest Oregon home.
